We shouldn't be encouraging female engineers

We should be encouraging female LEGO engineers! Hook ‘em young and the bricks will do the rest, and even if they don’t LEGOs just make children more well-rounded anyway (I dare you to submit proof to the contrary).

I was reading ttyymmnn’s thing about !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (not what you think) and how it’s almost impossible to find a legitimate real engineering hero for anyone, doubly so for women. Elon Musk is the only one I can think of that even comes close. It’s very hard to convince someone that engineering is sexy based on role models and overcoming the nerdy perceptions, so it’s probably a better bet to just let them get into it hands-on and let them discover how fun it is first-hand. And then once they enter into the engineering field hopefully we’ll have a ton of female Elon Musks.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of Legos.

But... but... the lede in the post contradicts the title. It’s only clickbait if you can only read the title.

=P

TL:DR - Give LEGO to girls and boys. Sometimes they turn into engineers, like me.

I learned a new word today, lede. And here I thought I spoke the queens English quite well.

How do you Pronunciate that? /lid/? (like in he’s the leader)

I played with Legos when I was a kid. I’m now in college working towards a mechanical engineering degree. Funny how that works.

Thanks for the shout out. Tilly Shilling was da bomb. I particularly liked the bit about how she wouldn’t marry her husband until he lapped Brooklands at an average of 100 mph. Because she had already done it. She was awesome.

It is pronouced just like lead (as is leader, not as in the toxic metal/element).

What would happen if we just stopped all attempts at social engineering? Scary right?

My suspicion (although, I mean, I’m a guy, so I don’t have direct perspective here) is that the problem isn’t so much a lack of encouragement for women to enter engineering, as much as the presence of discouragement.

Girls are steered towards playing with dolls instead of Lego, which goes to your point. Girls are steered away from STEM educational paths, because that’s not “woman’s work”. Basically, the problem with sexism in engineering and other male-dominated fields really begins when girls are toddlers , 20 years or so before they’d even enter the workforce.
